Today I had the pleasure of accompanying Sam on his school field trip. It was a "community helpers" themed trip that included a visit to a grocery store, post office, hair salon and jewelry store. We ate lunch at pizza inn and then visited a local pumpkin patch. Here's a rundown of the good and not so good parts of our day.
Good: The joy of seeing my boy be completely mortified as he was handed a hair net and made to pimp it through the entire tour of the grocery store.
Not so good: Me trying to stay awake through the cake decorator's "this is how I make a flower bud and balloon" demonstration.
Good: Admiring his manners while watching him wait patiently in line to receive his stamp and drop his letter in the mail slot.
Not so good: A whole lot of kids, adults and a bull dog named Princess crammed into the very small, very hot post office.
Good: Seeing Sam admire the gemstones and gold at the jewelry store.
Not so good: The panic every mother there felt when the owner passed around a very small bag of gold pellets to the busy five year olds and then informed them, "Okay, boys and girls, be careful not to open it because that bag of gold is worth over SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS."
Good: The presentation the hair stylists gave on the importance of taking care of yourself and looking your best, complete with pictures of Albert Einstein and Snoop Dog.
Not so good: The sudden turn in the presentation that landed us right into a discussion about lice. It left me itching and Sam took the stylists instructions of "not sharing things with your friends" to heart(she was referring to hats and coats) and he has vowed to never use anything the belongs to another human being.
Good: Eating lunch with dozens of five year olds.
Not so good: Eating lunch with dozens of five year olds.
Good: Visiting the local pumpkin patch that sells the free range eggs from our chickens.
Not so good: The heat. Eighty degrees and humid, the perfect weather for gnats and fleeting patience.
Good: Sneaking away to the "store" at the pumpkin patch to buy a cold drink for me, Ally and our I'm so thirsty I'm gonna die boys.
Not so good: Sitting four cans of coke on the counter and being told, "That'll be eight dollars, mam."
It was a great day, not so good moments included. Because I was with him, and that's all that really matters.
Mortified. (This boy will never work in a restaurant, school lunch room or any facility that requires protective hair gear as part of their uniform.)
Receiving his stamp.
Admiring the jewelry.
At the pumpkin patch with Cannon and his new buddy, Avery.
